Disorientated

It has been a very unsteady 6 weeks or so. This past weekend was just awful.Completely overwhelmed by the sensation of motion etc. walking like a robot, turning and bending slowly, disorientated with the walls appearing to move back and forth. The house has become that obstacle course again. The head pressure has been immense. It has felt like my head would explode at times. Static like vision causing everything to appear in a thick foggy haze. I seem to have slipped back into the old routine of my symptoms progressively getting worse as the day moves on. Evenings have not been good. Family members just walking by me in the hall are causing me to be thrown off balance, the push and pull sensations are strong. The crunch from eating a cracker is shaking my vision and disorientating me. These things I have never gotten used to and never will. Living life with this vestibular condition is to merely exist. It's been way too long with so much effort taken to have to constantly keep going back to this overwhelmed state but what can I do?

  1. Hi Swimmyhead. I'm Bobblehead-Googly eyes. All day I float, get pushed up or pulled strongly into the floor and actually feel like I lost height walking around the house. My head is weighted on the right side. The tinnitus is very loud. Yep, crunching a crouton the other day sent my head vibrating. Brushing my teeth is super googly for my eyes. I've given up explaining to people, I may look fine but my head is a mess. I'm 7 weeks post vestibular neuritis. I'm an equestrian, I ride dressage and haven't ridden my horse since this happened and may never ride again. . . it's all about balance and I don't have that anymore. Thanks for your blog, I've enjoyed reading it.

  2. Hi there, Thanks for the comment. It seems we both share a very similar reality. I am not a doctor but as far as I am aware vestibular neuritis and a very similar condition called labyrinthitis often improve with time. I take it from your post that you have felt this way for several weeks now which means you are still within the normal recovery time of 1-8 weeks. Have you been offered vestibular rehabilitation exercises? If not then my advise would be to ask your doctor if you could begin vestibular rehabilitation or any other treatment that might aid your recovery. Also you might want to ask your doctor if you can be seen by a neuro-otologist these are specialists who specifically deal with dizziness, vertigo and giddiness. Keep going and keep searching for answers and I am sure you will be back to riding your horse again.

    Take care
